Pathophysiology Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 1

Pathophysiology - Essay Example To manage his lifestyle, the patient should minimize the fat intake through consumptions of energy dense foods that lack fiber contents. He should engage in breads prepared from whole wheat flour and exclude the use of any oil. The patient should also consume a lot of vegetables and fruits that should be eaten raw instead of juice. He should completely avoid alcohol, cakes, pastries, sweet meat, cheese, ice-creams, gathia, puris, red meat and jam (Balakrishnan, 2004). The patient is advised to take part in regular exercise, for instance, a brisk walk early in the morning for around 30 minutes. This is helpful because exercise increases blood circulation, lowers blood lipids, increases HDL, minimizes platelet adhesiveness and increases fibrinolysis (Balakrishnan, 2004). It is proved that tobacco smoking increases atherosclerosis throughout the whole cardiovascular system. A lot of chemicals in cigarettes supply to atherosclerosis. Smoking is believed to directly destroy the inner lining of the artery, the endothelium which enhances the initiation of atherosclerosis. Smoking also promotes the blood to clot easily. Clotting incorporated with hardening and narrowing of the arteries result to blockage in the coronary artery that may result to sudden cardiac death (Schneider & Fields 2006). Everyone in the society experiences some form of chronic stress. All kinds of stresses that is emotional, social and psychological maximizes the risk of heart disease and hypertension. This should be avoided because chronic stress enhances other risk factors of heart disease for example smoking, high cholesterol, physical inactivity and obesity (Schneider & Fields, 2006). People tend to be exposed to more risk of cardiovascular diseases as they get old. The blood pressure of old people tends to increase constantly with each passing year. Although old people engaged in daily routines and activities, their blood pressure does not increase with age. For the old

Two Factors Theory Essay Example for Free

Two Factors Theory Essay The organization in question has been completely evaluated based upon Herzberg’s motivational theory the results were astounding.   According to Herzberg’s theory much of the dissatisfaction in the environment can be eliminated with regular care and maintenance.   The company policies and procedures are weak; therefore, employees do not feel the practices implemented communicate the company’s vision and expectations in a solid manner.   The quality of supervision is low, as our leadership staff has not been fully trained to support the company vision.    As a result of poor supervision and weak company policy, employees feel they are unable to develop a working relationship with their direct superiors. Keeping the above in mind as well as the physical surroundings, working conditions can be improved so that employees feel they are working in a supportive and safe environment.   Salaries are low, compared to our competition and need to be increased in order to obtain quality employees.   The result of the conditions described above, it is almost impossible for employees to develop relationships with their peers. In order to properly function as a company we must satisfy our employees’ needs by not only improving the conditions listed above, but also implementing several motivators.  Ã‚   Employees must feel a sense of achievement daily, as well as receive recognition for their hard work.   Implementing something as an employee of the month program and having some type of goal setting for performance will give the staff a way to measure their productivity and feel recognized for their efforts. Employees must also enjoy their work and many are unable to do so due to lack of training and poor supervision. Our employees also feel that there is no room for advancement and personal growth within the company. Implementing a training program for new employees as well as our long-term employees will improve morale.   The new employee training program will ensure that staff is given the right tools to perform their duties and the proper training to perform them efficiently. Training programs for the long-term employees will open the doors for advancement.   Through effective employee training programs we will be able to accurately measure performance, improve morale within the teams, develop positive working relationships between team members and provide various opportunities to our staff. Juxtaposing Justice: Retribution to Rehabilitation Tà ©a Francesca Price Arizona State University Timelessly capturing in written works the complexities of the human condition is a feat rarely accomplished by writers. However for the â€Å"Father of English Literature,† Geoffrey Chaucer, and the world’s pre-eminent dramatist, William Shakespeare, conveying the essence of humanity artistically was seemingly effortless. Both observant authors are known for their ability to compose characters that juxtapose recognizable human characteristic such as hatred and love, jealousy and goodwill, and justice and mercy. Within Chaucer’s 14th century collection of stories entitled The Canterbury Tales is a comical narration of a somber topic called The Wife of Bath’s Tale, which draws speculation for the justice served to a Knight of Camelot who rapes a maiden. While King Arthur would have the Knight executed for his heinous actions, Queen Guinevere grants the knight a year and a day to discover what women desire, the very thing he disregarded whilst committing his crime. Another work that features a similar concept of justice is the Elizabethan era comedy, The Merchant of Venice, by William Shakespeare; through his own unique and mastered skill, Shakespeare embodies the quality of justice precisely in the character of Jewish moneylender Shylock, who in dogged pursuit of a bond against the merchant Antonio, receives the very fair dealing he craves through the character of Portia, the personification of mercy. Each author observed and understood that through human weakness justice is often undermined, for people disobey society’s laws to their own iniquitous ends. Their works depict a transformation in the practice of justice, from... ...Press released an article called â€Å"Death Penalty Isn’t a Deterrent on Murder Rate: National Research Council,† which discussed the lack of evidence in the effectiveness of the death penalty deterring crime. The article identifies issues that include not considering alternatives to capital punishment or sufficiently weighing how killers assess the risk of execution. The authors of the report are quoted to be â€Å"disappointed to reach the same result as a 1978 study†. If retribution as justice has yet to be proven beneficial to society, an alternative to consider is the concept of justice outlined in works like The Wife of Bath’s Tale and The Merchant of Venice. They are important pieces of literature to promote, for despite their age and comedic style, both works prompt a debate over the concept of justice and in what way justice is most effectively served.

Populism DBQ

In the late nineteenth century, around 1880-1900, many farmers were experiencing problems and threats to their way of life. The valid complaints of the farmers dealt with the money supply system in America and the large railroad companies. In 1892, the platform for the Populist Party was laid down. In this platform it is stated that â€Å"the national power to create money is appropriated to enrich bondholders †¦ thereby adding millions to the burdens of the people.†This is discussing the demonetization of silver and the negative effect it has on the common people, such as farmers. Later on in the platform is it also discussed that silver has had widespread acceptance as a coin for a very long time and by demonetizing it to increase the purchasing power of gold, the results are several negative consequences which will eventually lead to â€Å"terrible convulsions, the destruction of civilization, or the establishment of an absolute despotism.†This unhappiness of fa rmers regarding the money system in the United States is also shown in a political cartoon from The Farmers Voice, a Chicago newspaper in the late 1880's or early 1890's. The cartoon entitled â€Å"The Eastern Master and His Western Slaves† depicts farmers as slaves to the wealthy eastern businessmen. It is representing the exploitation of the farmers and shows yet another of their economic struggles; the mortgages they bore on their farms.Further evidence that supports and validates the farmers' complaints about the current economic situation is found in William McKinley's acceptance speech given in Canton, Ohio on August 26, 1896. In his speech, McKinley said that even though free silver â€Å"would not make farming less laborious and more profitable.. † farmers and laborers are the ones who suffer the greatest as a result of the cheap money. â€Å"They are the first to feel its bad effects and the last to recover from them†¦ †. The belief that silver is the solution of the problems for farmers is opposed in J.Laurence Laughlin's â€Å"Causes of Agricultural Unrest† article in the November, 1896 issue of Atlicantic Monthly. Laughlin describes that the increase in supply without an increase of demand led farmers to believe that silver can solve their issues by his saying, â€Å"the sudden enlargement of the supply without any corresponding increase of demand produced that alarming fall in the price of wheat which has been made the farmer's excuse for thinking that silver is the magic panacea for all his ills†¦Ã¢â‚¬ He then goes on to describe that farmers have simply pushed the blame on the scarcity of gold as opposed to realizing the actual cause is their own overproduction of wheat. The effects of the different acts and laws regarding money supply is shown in the United States government data from 1961 depicting the population of the country along side the money in circulation from the year 1865 through 1895. This dat a shows that from 1865 through 1885, the population was increasing, however the amount of money in circulation was decreasing rapidly. This suggests that the effects of the acts and laws regarding money were resulting in the deflation of of the currency. against the railroad companies is credible because during this time period the government showed enormous favoritism towards large businesses even though the railroads were monopolies. Further discontent with monopolies is expressed in A Call to Action: An Interpretation of the Great Uprising. Its Source and Causes by James B.Weaver, a Populist candidate for president in the election of 1892. Weaver described that trusts and monopolies use â€Å"threats, intimidation, bribery, fraud, wreck, and pillage† to â€Å"impoverish the producer, drive him to a single market, reduce the price of every class of labor connected with the trade, throw out of employment large numbers of people †¦ , and finally †¦ they increase the price to the consumer†¦ †.The farmers and laborers of the late nineteenth century faced two main problems; money supply and large businesses such as railroads. These issues resulted in a variety of complaints from the agriculturists, however the grievances did prove to be valid based on the evidence previously presented. The farmers were struggling to survive off of the small profit they received, and they suffered even further when large monopolies and railroad companies took actions that dwindled their profits further.

Religious Parallels Lord of the Flies

William Golding's Lord of the Flies is an allegorical novel from numerous perspectives. It draws societal parallels to a post-war world, political parallels to different methods of government, and even psychoanalytical parallels to the psychological models of Freud. One of the most prominent allegories contained in the story is its parallel to the Bible. William Golding creates these parallels in many different ways, through both settings, and the actions of characters. Interestingly, every religious allegory in Lord of the Flies is incomplete; they are similar to events in the Bible, but none of them are completely synonymous.Golding's creates a unique stance on Christianity by his flawed allegories to the Garden of Eden and Jesus’ teachings and death; he shows that he favors some Christian values and some of the Bible’s messages, but is opposed to others. The first connection between Lord of the Flies and the Bible is located at the very beginning of both books: the s etting of the island reminds one of the Garden of Eden. Golding describes the island: â€Å"Beyond the platform there was more enchantment. Some act of God [†¦] had banked sand inside the lagoon so that there was a long, deep pool in the beach with a high ledge of pink granite at the further end† (10).He also notes that the â€Å"shore was fledged with palm trees. These stood or leaned or reclined against the light [†¦]† (9). This is eerily similar to the Garden of Eden, which â€Å"the Lord God planted [†¦] and he placed there the man whom he had formed. Out of the ground the Lord God made various trees grow that were delightful to look at and good for food, with the tree of life in the middle of the garden [†¦]† (The New American Bible, Gen. 2:8-9). If â€Å"the man† in the Bible is taken to be Ralph and the other boys, then another comparison can be drawn. When Ralph strips down and swims in the lagoon, it reminds one of Adam naked i n the garden. The water could be seen as a connection to baptism, which is the recognition of a new birth or creation. This is one of the few connections in the novel which is entirely parallel with that of Bible, suggesting that Golding probably supported the creation theory. Yet another connection the Garden of Eden appears in the â€Å"beastie† that the boys are afraid of; it is often connected to the serpent in the garden that tempts Eve and causes original sin. These connections, however, are far from ideal. The island is indeed close to utopian, but there is the â€Å"long scar† (7) from the airplane crash. Golding probably rejected the idea that anything, even if created by God, could be perfect. Also, the serpent in the bible is always thought of as an external force, such as the devil, whereas Simon will eventually learn that the beast is not an external but an internal fear. This could be interpreted to mean the Golding did not believe that original sin came f rom an outside force; rather, it is an inherent part of human nature.Golding’s characterization of Simon creates a strong link between his actions on the island and the life of Jesus in the gospels. The first major example of this is when Simon is walking through the woods and is followed by the littluns: [The littluns] talked, cried out unintelligibly [†¦]. Then, amid the roar of bees in the afternoon sunlight, Simon found for them the fruit they could not reach, pulled off the choicest from up in the foliage, passed them back down to the endless, outstretched hands. When he had satisfied them he paused and looked round. † (56)

Bay Of Pigs 10 pages essays

Bay Of Pigs 10 pages essays The story of the failed invasion of Cuba at the Bay of Pigs, which is located on the south coast of Cuba about 97 miles southeast of Havanna, was one of mismanagement, poor judgment, and stupidity (Bay of Pigs 378). The blame for the failed invasion falls directly on the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) and a young president by the name of John F. Kennedy. The whole intention of the invasion was to assault communist Cuba and put an end to Fidel Castro. Ironically, thirty-nine years after the Bay of Pigs, Fidel Castro is still in power. First, it is necessary to look at why the invasion happened and then why it did not work. From the end of World War II until the mid-eighties, most Americans could agree that communism was the enemy. Communism wanted to destroy our way of life and corrupt the freest country in the world. Communism is an economic system in which one person or a group of people are in control. The main purpose of communism is to make the social and economic status of all individuals the same. It abolishes the inequalities in possession of property and distributes wealth equally to all. The main problem with this is that one person who is very wealthy can be stripped of most of his wealth so that another person can have more The main reason for the Bay of Pigs attack on Cuba was the change to communism. On January 1, 1959, Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista fled the country for the safety of the Dominican Republic (Goode, Stephen 75). Fidel Castro and his guerrilla warriors overthrew the old government dictated by Batista. During the next couple of weeks, Castro established a new government and on February 16, he was officially declared premier (Finkelstein, Norman H. 127). The United States accepted this new regime as a relief from the harsh, corrupt, and unpopular government of Batista. Soon after everything settled down, Castro a...

Reading skill Essay Essays

Reading skill Essay Essays Reading skill Essay Essay Reading skill Essay Essay Foregrounding or Underscoring Key Ideas When you highlight or underline cardinal words and thoughts. you are placing the most of import parts of the text. There’s an of import accomplishment at work here: You can’t highlight or underline everything. so you have to separate between the facts and thoughts that are most of import ( major thoughts ) and those facts and thoughts that are helpful but non so of import ( minor or back uping thoughts ) . Highlight merely the major thoughts. so you don’t stop up with a text that’s wholly highlighted. An efficaciously highlighted text will do for an easy and fruitful reappraisal. When you jump back. you’ll be rapidly reminded of the thoughts that are most of import to retrieve. Highlighting or underscoring major points as you read besides allows you to retain more information from the text. Skim in front and leap back. Mark up the text. Make speci? hundred observations about the text. Planing Ahead and Jumping Back Skimming in front enables you to see what’s coming up in your reading. Page through the text you’re about to read. Notice how the text is broken down. what the chief subjects are. and the order in which they are covered. Notice cardinal words and thoughts that are boldfaced. bulleted. boxed. or otherwise highlighted. Planing through the text beforehand will fix you for what you are about to read. It’s a batch like look intoing out the hills and curves in the class before a cross-country race. If you know what’s in front. you know how to gait yourself. so you’re prepared to manage what’s to come. When you? nish your reading. leap back. Review the sum-ups. headers. and highlighted information in the text. Notice both what the writer highlighted and what you highlighted. By leaping back. you help solidify in your head the thoughts and information you merely read. You’re reminded of how each thought? T into the whole. how ideas and information are connected. When you make connexions between thoughts. you’re much more likely to retrieve them. Circling Unfamiliar Words One of the most of import wonts to develop is that of circling and looking up unfamiliar words and phrases. If possible. don’t sit down to read without a dictionary by your side. It is non uncommon for the significance of an full sentence to hinge on the significance of a individual word or phrase. and if you don’t cognize what that word or phrase agencies. you won’t understand the sentence. Besides. this wont enables you to rapidly and steadily spread out your vocabulary. so you’ll be a more con? dent reader and talker. If you don’t hold a dictionary readily available. attempt to find the significance of the word as best you can from its context- that is. the words and thoughts around it. ( There’s more on this subject in Lesson 3. ) Then. do certain you look up the word every bit shortly as possible so you’re sure of its significance. Taging Up the Text Marking up the text creates a direct physical nexus between you and the words you’re reading. It forces you to pay closer attending to the words you read and takes you to a higher degree of comprehension. Use these three schemes to tag up text: ten – HOW TO USE THIS BOOK – Making Marginal Notes Recording your inquiries and reactions in the borders turns you from a inactive receiving system of information into an active participant in a duologue. ( If you’re reading a library book. compose your reactions in a notebook. ) You will acquire much more out of the thoughts and information you read about if you create a â€Å"conversation† with the author. Here are some illustrations of the sorts of reactions you might compose down in the border or in your notebook:  ¦  ¦  ¦  ¦ Making Observations Good readers know that authors use many different schemes to show their thoughts. Even if you know really small about those schemes. you can do utile observations about what you read to better understand and retrieve the author’s thoughts. You can detect. for illustration. the author’s pick of words ; the construction of the sentences and paragraphs ; any repeat of words or thoughts ; of import inside informations about people. topographic points. and things ; and so on. This step- making observations- is indispensable because your observations ( what you notice ) lead you to logical illations about what you read. Inferences are decisions based on ground. fact. or grounds. You are invariably doing illations based on your observations. even when you’re non reading. For illustration. if you notice that the sky is full of dark. heavy clouds. you might deduce that it is traveling to rain ; if you notice that your coworker has a stack of gardening books on her desk. you might deduce that she likes horticulture. If you misunderstand what you read. it is frequently because you haven’t looked closely adequate at the text. As a consequence. you base your illations on your ain thoughts and experiences. non on what’s really written in the text. You end up coercing your ain thoughts on the writer ( instead than listening to what the writer has to state ) and so organizing your ain thoughts about it. It’s critical. so. that you begin to truly pay attending to what authors say and how they say it. If any of this sounds confounding now. don’t concern. Each of these thoughts will be exhaustively explained in the lessons that follow. In the interim. get down practising active reading as best you can. Get down by taking the pretest. Questions frequently come up when you read. They may be answered subsequently in the text. but by that clip. you may hold forgotten the inquiry! And if your inquiry isn’t answered. you may desire to discourse it with person: â€Å"Why does the author describe the new public assistance policy as ‘unfair’ ? † or â€Å"Why does the character react in this manner? † Agreements and dissensions with the writer are bound to originate if you’re actively reading. Write them down: â€Å"That’s non needfully true! † or â€Å"This policy makes a batch of sense to me. † Connections you note can be either between the text and something that you read earlier or between the text and your ain experience. For illustration. â€Å"I remember experiencing the same manner when I. . . † or â€Å"This is similar to what happened in China. † Evaluations are your manner of maintaining the writer honest. If you think the writer isn’t supplying suf? cient support for what he or she is stating or that there’s something incorrect with that support. say so: â€Å"He says the dropping of the bomb was inevitable. but he doesn’t explain why† or â€Å"This is a really sel? sh ground. † eleven READING COMPREHENSION SUCCESS IN 20 MINUTES A DAY Pretest B efore you start your survey of reading accomplishments. you may desire to acquire an thought of how much you already cognize and how much you need to larn. Easy on the adjectives - Emphasis

Easy on the adjectives Easy on the adjectives New research suggests that if you want your writing to be shared online then overusing adjectives is not wise, advisable, judicious, big or clever. [Mental note: should probably edit this.] The findings come from social media scientist Dan Zarrella, who aims in his book Zarrellas Hierarchy of Contagiousness to demystify social media marketing for the masses. After examining how often online content was shared, he came to one definite conclusion: the less complex the language, the more likely it was to be passed on. And, after studying which types of words were the most mobile, he found the biggest no-nos were adjectives and adverbs. This is actually a good tip for just about any writing. Its easy to imagine that cramming in adjectives will give your writing colour or help create more vivid images in your readers mind. But more often than not they do just the opposite, and merely add clutter that slows your reader down. Fledgling fiction writers are taught to adopt the lotus position and chant the mantra show, dont tell over and over until their posture is perfect and they never want to overdo the adjectives and adverbs again. But this advice evidently isnt only for creative writing. Its much better to choose verbs (the most-shared word type) and nouns that work hard, rather than using adjectives or adverbs as crutches for your writing to hobble along on. The finished piece will be tighter and more expressive for it. For example, instead of ran quickly, how about sprinted? Or bounded? See how either could replace the phrase, but each gives a very different and more distinct mental image? Sometimes adjectives are simply redundant. Forward planning, for example. Is anyone out there still planning what to do yesterday? Have a look at these (genuine) examples and spot the pointless words: Teen dies after fatal stabbing Gunned down by armed rebels A visual treat for the eyes Ill-chosen adjectives can also lead to unintentional silliness (which can be delightful for everyone but the writer): Stiff opposition expected to casket-less funeral plan Statistics show that teen pregnancy drops off significantly after age 25 This isnt to say that all adjectives should be banned on pain of death. Mark Twain put it nicely, if youll forgive the adverb: When you catch an adjective, kill it. No, I dont mean utterly, but kill most of them then the rest will be valuable. They weaken when they are close together. They give strength when they are wide apart. Perhaps its worth thinking of them like magnets: repellent together, useful kept apart, and not recommended anywhere near computers.

"Former Western Australian premier Geoff Gallop, now an academic at Murdoch University, made exactly this point: "Our growing links to China and India [should be] put into the context of our long-term and still developing partnerships with Japan. In all of our thinking about Asian engagement we cannot ignore the strength of our links to Japan. We share democratic values, face similar demographic and social challenges, and have many interests in common in respect of regional and international issues." Doves Campaign for Real Beauty Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words

Doves Campaign for Real Beauty - Essay Example In doing so, women are unaware that what this conformity to such a cruel standard is crushing their ego, shifting their focus on more important matters such as relationships, spiritual well-being and others to the more trivial things such as physical appearance. Dove is aware of the negative effects of today's concept of beauty to women of all ages. As a company with such an esteemed reputation as a global brand and a conscientious seller of beauty products, Dove wanted to look into these issues that women are dealing with. Together with a team of experts in their respective fields, Dove developed "The Real Truth About Beauty: A Global Report". This aimed to look deeper into the connection between women and their idea of being beautiful. Furthermore, this study intended to find out how women feel about themselves. This includes how women define their own concept of beauty, their degree of contentment in relation to their appearance and the impact of their views on their sense of happiness. (Campaign for Real Beauty). In every era, the concept of beauty changes; likewise, for every culture, there are also different standards to define beauty. Women, depending on their age, racial background have their own concepts and standards of attractiveness. Fashion spreads and television ads more often than not feature reed-thin models with flawless skin and picture-perfect features. This concept of beauty has led to most of the young women, most even in their teens to worry that they are not tall, blonde, pretty, or thin enough to measure up to this hyped up idea of loveliness. A majority of women nowadays feel that they don't hit the mark as far as physical beauty is concerned. Many young women and girls have developed issues with their body, certain facial features, skin tone, and this has paved the way for them to seek acceptance through other avenues. As a consequence, many have been lost to eating disorders, abusive relationships, substance abuse and other physical and psychological disorders. This is too hefty a price to pay for a girl who just wants nothing more than the world to accept her just the way she is. Review of Literature Dove believes that "every girl deserves to feel beautiful just the way she is". With Dove's supremacy in the business of beauty, it is a big deal that Dove has come with the "Campaign for Real Beauty" advertising campaign series. This is a revolutionary take on traditional advertising efforts as it borders towards social responsibility. Speaking of social responsibility, Dove is aware of the consequences of the impact that a company's advertising campaign may have on the people that it will reach. Dove is also conscious that with the way the world of advertising portrays beauty nowadays, peoples' views of beauty have become misrepresented to such a great extent. The launch of "Campaign for Real Beauty" is Dove's way of serving the public by attempting to correct

Reflective Practice Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Reflective Practice - Essay Example The critical incident review, modeling excellence and proactive learning are the ways that are being covered in this paper. The process of reflective learning is very considerable for the students as it serves in personal growth, professional growth along with bringing an important change in the lives of the people. Therefore, all sections of the paper cover an in-depth analysis of the situations, where my personal learning acquired from the events and situations are also highlighted and discussed (Morrison, 1996; Feldman, 2005). Critical Incident Analysis The incident that I find significant for me is the learning experience I have acquired from my class PPT. My experience is based on the reflection that I gained from the PPT slides that served me great deal in understanding the phenomenon of learning. The slides helped to reflect on my experiences with using best approaches. ‘Reflection’ is one of my class PPTs that I have found too important for me, as it initiates wi th a suggestion that one needs to have an experience, which later should be observed keenly. Based on the observation, one needs to reflect upon the experience, in which there is a need to make analyses too. I also learnt that while reflecting upon an experience we need to generate new ideas. Before experiencing these slides, I had a limited thinking about the reflection on any incident. Thus, it can be said that the experience was amazing because it served to facilitate understanding of the psychological phenomenon of direct and indirect learning processes (Boud, 1985). Throughout experiencing the class PPT, I acquired a great deal of knowledge and also became aware of some of the universal facts. I learnt that when two people interact with each other, their conversation may bring significant change either on the perception of one of them or it may serve both to extract out a new conclusion. My learning through such informative slides is worth for me because now I have become quite conscious when I m experiencing a learning process. Moreover, I have also analyzed that my previous state of unconsciousness towards psychological phenomenon has transformed noticeably, because the class slides have enhanced my view to feel the transformation and revolution in human being. The significant part of the class PPT was its initial general discussion about the simple concept of learning, which was later followed by the details of the learning processes. On the other hand, I have also analyzed that it is not necessary to teach someone with giving descriptive explanation; however, if few important and concise bullets points are taught, the result could be effective to serve the learning (Brockbank & Mcgill, 2012). The class slides has cleared many fundamental concepts such as, they define the difference between coaching and counseling in a precise way that it cannot be forgotten. My experience with PPT slides is not only effective for me; however, the experience has also s erved me understanding the process of learning when we work in team. Furthermore, I have realized that the effects of learning I acquired from the class PPT are effectual for me in every walk of life. The reason behind keeping the class PPT experience among the significant incidents is the modification in my behavior when it comes to experience a learning process. The changing between my past perception and the new one developed by class PPT is quite vital for my professional life too because the learning is such a process that remains

Relationship between organizational leadership, culture and Dissertation

Relationship between organizational leadership, culture and performance in family businesses - Dissertation Example However, there is a dearth of research regarding the extent to which the founder is able to embed strategic behaviors into family firm management and culture or the degree to which these behaviors impact the financial performance of these firms (Sorenson, 2000). Some effort has been made to examine the leadership styles of family firm leaders and the relationship of these styles to family and non-family members (Kellerman, 2008). Aldrich and Cliff (2003) suggested that entrepreneurial leadership attributes likely influenced family firm strategies, processes, and structures. Sorenson (2000) found that participative leaders achieved high performance in both the family and the business dimensions of the firm. The findings of the test hypotheses regarding performance outcomes in these studies were not conclusive regarding the effects of leadership styles on performance. Research on the leadership styles of the founder and their effect on family and non-family members may provide insight into family firm performance (Sharma, 2004). Purpose/Research Questions The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between organizational leader’s thinking and behavioral styles, its culture, and financial performance. Three family firms will be selected for this study. Participants will include current owners, founders, and family member and non-family member managers and employees. ... Preliminary Literature Review The Family Firm Although family firms have played an integral role in world economies throughout history, research into family businesses did not begin to come into prominence until 1975 (Handler, 1989). Handler's attempt to integrate the field around a common purpose by defining a family firm as "an organization whose major operating decisions and plans for leadership succession are influenced by family members serving in management or on the board" (p. 262) is characteristic of such ventures in its difficulty to operationalize. Furthermore, Astrachan, Klein, and Smyrnios (2002) have defined family business along a continuum measuring the levels of family influence across the dimensions of power, experience, and culture. Their intent is to provide an objective and standardized measurement of family involvement allowing comparison along a broad spectrum of family businesses. Sharma (2002) developed a typology which creates 72 categories of family firms b ased on the possible levels of family and non-family involvement in seven areas as identified on a firm's stakeholder map. Her intent is to develop a mechanism for differentiating between family businesses along the continuum from the publicly traded international corporation to the mom and pop enterprise. Leadership Styles For this study leadership styles specifically refer to the thinking and behavioral styles of family firm leaders. Leadership styles are divided into three composite orientations with each orientation consisting of four styles each. The constructive orientation (achievement, self-actualizing, humanistic-encouraging, and affiliative) characterize thinking and behavior that

Kit Kat Company Essay 1: INTRODUCTION Kit Kat started in August 29 in 1935 in York by Rowntree, in 1973 Kit Kat entered in Japan market. In 1988, Nestle took over the Kit Kat ( Kit Kat, 2014). Today, Kit Kat is very successful in Japan, Kit Kat has more then two hundred different products in Japan, it help Kit Kat get more and more market share in Japan( Kit Kat, 2014). More and more people think Kit Kat is like a logo in Japan, because there are some special Kit Kat products only selling in Japan. Kit Kat success in Japan is the fact, but why Kit Kat is successful in Japan, it must be affect with generic strategy. Kit Kat using the right strategy to help them success. Generic strategy is very important for the company, it will help the company increase the competitive. When the Kit Kat choose the right generic strategy, it will help the company more stronger, they can get more market shares, help the company to be successful. 2. Generic Strategy Generic strategy was described by Micheal Porter in 1979, Porter’s generic strategy is talking about how a company increase the competitive advantage in their chosen market. There are three generic strategy, cost leadership, differentiation or focus, focus is about two different way, cost focus or differentiation focus (Oxlearn.com, 2014). Cost leadership strategy means save the cost in the organization help the company to increase the competitive advantage. For example: Wal-Mart, they are using cost leadership, they are very successful, they find the cheap domestic suppliers and from low-wage foreign markets, they keep the cost and using  the lower price selling to the customers (Small Business Chron.com, 2014). Differentiation strategy means a company using many different products to increase the competitive advantage and get more market shares. For example, Apple company is a very successful in the world, they have many different products, iPhone, iPad, iPod, Mac, Watch, etc. They are using different products to improve themselves, help the company to get more customers and market shares. Focus strategy is including cost focus and differentiation focus. The different with cost focus and differentiation focus is focus the cost or products differentiation. Cost focus is focus the cost, use the lower cost to improve the competitive advantage. Differentiation focus is a company try to produce the different products in the new market take the company more stronger, increasing the competitive advantage. Kit Kat is a successful company in the world, they are using cost leadership strategy and differentiation strategy. There are some reasons for why Kit Kat chosen cost leadership strategy. Lower cost raw materials. Kit Kat owned by Nestle SA. Kit Kat is selling chocolate, when they making the products, the need the raw materials, for example: sugar, milk, coffee and cocoa. Nestle SA is doing business with this raw materials, so they can use the cheaper prices to get the raw materials (MarketWatch, 2014). That will help the company to reduce the cost, it means Kit Kat can use the lower price to selling their product and keep the profit, increase the competitive advantage. Retail. In January 15 2014, the world’s first Kit Kat opened in Tokyo (Ashcraft, 2014). Before 2014, Kit Kat do not have any store, they only selling in the other shops. All of the customer can buy the Kit Kat from the supermarket or shops. It can help the company save the cost. They are selling in the supermarket can help the company, they do not need to hire more employees and open the own shop they need to spend more cost. Today they opened the first store in Tokyo, but customer also can buy the Kit Kat from the supermarket or in other shops, it can help the company get more customer and increase the competitive advantages. There are some reasons for why Kit Kat chosen differentiation strategy. The strategy customer. Kit Kat has more then 200 different products in Japan. There are more then forty products are only selling in Japan, for example: Wasabi, Strawberry Cheesecake, Lemon Vinegar, and Cucumber (Break with Kit Kat, 2014). Kit Kat  produces many different products, that is achieve the differentiation strategy, they try to use the differentiation to improve the company. Different people has different taste, need and want, so different will get more and more customer to buy the products, different product is suitable to different customers. That is the reason why different products can increase the competitive advantage for the company. All of the different products have their own package, different colour and different weight. In 1942, Kit Kat fist time selling the blue Kit Kat in the market, in 1949, Kit Kat start to selling red Kit Kat in the market, after that, Kit Kat produced more and more different Kit Kat, for example, in 1990s Kit Kat start to selling the Nestle Macintosh Corporation ( Kit Kat, 2014). Japan is a developed country, people want to improve the quality of life, so they need more different products, they want more different experience. Everyones life is different, so they have different demand, students, workers and old people have different need, today you can find much more different Kit Kat in Japan, anyone can choose different Kit Kat for them. Different Kit Kat has own colour, people like different colour, so different colour can keep different customer and different weight is suitable for different customer, for example, if one family like eating Kit Kat, they need more weight, can help them save time, do not need to buy many times, so bigger weight is suit for them. Key competito rs. Kit Kat is doing business with chocolate, but there are some chocolate industry in the world, for example:Ferrero brands, Mars brands and Cadbury brands. They are also doing the business with chocolate, the are also very successful, so Kit Kat need to improve the competitive advantage. Other brand do not have much different products, but Kit Kat have many different products, it will help Kit Kat easy to get the customer. Kit Kat is owned by Nestlà © SA which also owns a range of other product brands, from 2007 to 2012, the market share only changed 0.7%, that mean differentiation help the Kit Kat keep the market shares (Break with Kit Kat, 2014). Kit Kat’s target market is men and women of all ages, so different products can help Kit Kat keep the market shares. All of the chocolate company selling the products in Japanese market, the number of customers is fixed, so Kit Kat is using differentiation strategy to increase the competitive advantage, when Kit Kat  fight with other company in the market, they are more stronger, they can get more market shares, help the company more successful. 3. Ebola and Kit Kat Ebola virus is an infectious disease, this disease has a high risk of death (Who.int, 2014). First cases notified in March 2014 in west Africa.(Who.int, 2014). It affect the price of cocoa, in November the price of cocoa up twenty percent, before November it was up to thirty-five percent to forty percent (PBS NewsHour, 2014). West Africa is the worlds largest cocoa origin, when Ebola virus found in west Africa, that affect the cocoa trade, many farmer in Ebola virus disease, because this disease has a high risk of death, so much of the farmer died of Ebola virus disease, so they lose a lot of labor, they do have enough people to working with the cocoa, so the chocolate company can not buy the enough cocoa, demand higher then supply, the price of cocoa will going up. In USA, all of the price of chocolate increase ten cents for each Kit Kat. Kit Kat is a chocolate company, cocoa is the most important raw material, they need the cocoa to make the chocolate, but the price of cocoa going up, so they need to spend more cost on the cocoa, but they did not pass all the cost to the customers, so in 2014 the sales slump seven percent (FoodNavigator-USA.com, 2014). Kit Kat can use operational level strategy. Operational level strategy A plan that details how a business will use its production resources to meet its goals. Many business managers will put together a detailed operation strategy in order to clearly present to subordinate staff their plans for how their portion of the business should function in order to attain its objectives (BusinessDictionary.com, 2014). The price of cocoa up around twenty percent is about the global economy, so all of the chocolate companies are increase the costs, they also need the cocoa to produce the products. If Kit Kat is using cost same like other time, they also want to keep the profit, they must transfer the cost to the customer, it means increase the price of the Kit Kat, but Kit Kat can choose to reduce the cost in the transport or other please, they also can find the cocoa supplies from other countries, help them to reduce the cost. Seventy percent cocoa from west Africa, there are also thirty percent cocoa they can find, using the cocoa from other may be is cheaper, try to save the cost in the other places, for example: package,  or transportation. Kit Kat can find the cheaper other raw materials, help the company to reduce the cost. When Kit Kat try to save the cost in other places, do not increase the price of products, they can increase the competitive advantage, help the company keep the customer and market shares. 4. Conclusion Kit Kat is a very successful company in Japan. Kit Kat is start from 1935 to now, Kit Kat has 79 years history. In this 79 years, Kit Kat from a small business becoming this successful company, because they are using the right strategy, right strategy can help the company service and becoming more stronger. They have more the four hundred different products, they can fight with the Ferrero brands, Mars brands and Cadbury brands, and becoming same with that brands, even more successful in Japan. Different strategy suit for different situation and different company, there is not best strategy, there is only suitable strategy, a strategy may be can take the company more and more successful or closed. 5. Coil Spring Modification Technical Engineering Essay

Coil Spring Modification Technical Engineering Essay A vehicles appearance can be improved by lowering the car height. This can be achieved by heating or cutting the coil springs. However, this modification can have effects on the vehicle wind resistance, centre of gravity and reduce excessive body role. This modification contributes in fuel efficiency and better handling. It can also have negative impacts and could cause a big damage in the vehicle as well as being unsafe for the passengers if not done properly. Compression springs are the cheapest coil spring to manufacture, they are built to withstand the forces of linear compression or pushing forces that makes them as the most durable type of coil spring available. The coil springs are made of heavy gauge steel wire that is used to support the vehicle. The ends are designed to be flat because of the applied evenly force at each end of the spring, decreases the buckling tendency, or to provide exact seating requirements and solid height reduction which may be compulsory by specific uses (Kiwi Springs limited, 2008). Coil springs usually have three types of ends which are: Tangential end: this type of spring will fall over if someone stands on its end because the end of the coils end remains to twist off in the space Tangential End Coil Spring Square end: the end of this design permits the spring to stand still when placed on the end because the end coil curves back down and touches the coil below it . http://www.budzter.com/images/adjusterPics/DSC00479_Small.jpg Pigtail end: this spring has the sort of square type end and contains a smaller diameter than the coil in the body of the spring http://pitstopusa.com/images/T14599086.jpg (EATON Detroit Springs, 2011) Theory Generally, the end design of the spring can tell straight whether it is safe to cut or not, which concluded that pigtail end and square end coil springs cannot be safely cut. As mentioned briefly above, cutting or heating the coil spring in the vehicle may have some implications in terms of structural integrity, drivability or road worthy aspects. Cutting the coil spring affects the spring rate to increase, stiffen it and making the handling and ride a bit firmer, this is caused by the spring design rule which uses the wire diameter and the number of coil to define the spring rate. The unit for spring rate is pound per inch (lb/in) which means amount of force needed to compress the coil spring by 1 inch. For example when cutting springs by more than 2 inches of the front suspension of the 60s or 70s Chevy without following the specifications, many problems can occur, things such as ground clearance difficulties, positive camber will be gained at an increasing rate as well as suspension traveling may be less effective. It is known that cutting a spring by 1 inch will cause the ride to get lower between 1.5 and 2 inches because of the spring ratio which is 1.5:1 and 2:1 (Smith, 2008) When having too soft spring rate the whole suspension system may be affected because the vehicle will keep on bouncing off the bump stops, while having too much spring rate can create lots of bouncing and cause the tires to lose the grip with the road. Also spring load can affect the suspension system because of the carried weight that a coil spring supports at any moment compressed height. For instance if we use a 10 tall inch spring at free height with 200 lb/in rate, with a compressed height of 6 inches, the support will be around 800 pounds at that height (De Los Santos, 2009) How do we calculate the spring rate? By using the following formula we are able to find out the spring rate of the compressed spring. K = Where k = constant pound of load per inch G = modulus of rigidity of spring material, pound per square inch d = wire diameter, inches n = number of active coils, which is the number of coils subjected to flexure (always less than the total number of coils) D = mean coil diameter, inches = Outer diameter Wire diameter http://www.engineersedge.com/spring2.gif (Engineers Edge, LLC, 2011) Experimental method In this project, the modification will be for lowering the car. Hence we are going to modify the 1995 Impala SS (Appendix 1). This modification will be simply achieved by cutting the springs. This will result in reducing the free length and spring height. Since we do not have access to the real material, this modification will be done in a virtual way by using calculation. Data: number of active coils = 6.5 inches Wire diameter = 0.685 Outside diameter of spring = 5.4375 inches Free length = 16.5 inches Compressed length = 14.05 inches By using the formula above, the conclusion of the spring rate will be 443.76 pounds/ inches (as on the appendix 1). If we want to modify this spring, we will cut one coil that will decrease the number of coils from 6.5 inches to 5.5 inches of active coils, outside diameter and wire diameter will remain the same and free length will change from 16.5 inches to 15.5 inches and compressed length from 14.05 to 13.05 inches. Results: K = = 11,250,000 x 0.6854 / 8 x 5.5 x 4.75253 K = 524.44 pounds/inch The result from the modification shows that the spring rate has been increased by 80.68 pounds/inch. According to Law Volume Vehicle Technical Association (Inc), (2000), states that no modification for changing the height of the vehicle should be done without the spring manufacturer and the heat method should not be used during the modification (Appendix 2). AA New Zealand allows modification of the road springs or shock absorbers if they are fitted as a direct replacement for the originals and should be fitted exactly the same way without raising or lowering the vehicle. Modifying the vehicle without a professional certifier could prevent the vehicle from getting WOF (Appendix 3). Discussion It is essential when modifying the coil spring to consider what reason we are modifying the spring. Other aspects that need to be considered are spring rate, spring index, total share stress and spring axial deflection. The whole suspension system might not perform as it should if proper procedures are not followed. Safety regulations should also be the main priority at all times when dealing with coil spring modification and the suspension system in general. Conclusion According to the results of the experiment in this report, it can be seen that by decreasing the spring height, the spring rate increases. By cutting the spring, we change the appearance of the car to be closer to the ground. It is very important to understand the disadvantages and advantages of what we are trying to achieve. It is also necessary for the driver to understand the change the modification will bring when using the vehicle in different environment. If the user is not able to tell the effects of modification, it is recommended to see a professional. References De Los Santos, H. (2009). Lowering Your Car Properly. How a leader can change a society :: Leadership

How a leader can change a society Leaders of the world and of any country particular plays most important role to achieve genuine happiness of its people. Good and capable leader leads its people and country to a peace and prosperity, while the cruel and incapable leader bring people to the world of sufferings and ultimately ruin country. Leader must not only be educated and experienced but it is important to be a compassionate and sensible to the problems faced by their people. Leaders of the government should win the trust of people by being strategically friendly avoiding any kind of provocation or war with neighboring countries and must also allow a degree of transparency in the day to day working and the governance of the country. In my view most important character of a good leader is that they must be compassionate. Having a personality of caring about people is important. You can?t be a good leader unless you generally like people. That is how you bring out the best in them. No matter what credential they have and how much experience they have in administration but without being compassionate they can't ever become a responsible and successful leader. For example Hitler is known for his cruelty and he had no feelings for his own race. He failed to understand the feelings of Jews and thus persecuted them. He also failed to know the fact that the strength of his country lies in them, while opposite is Mahatma Gandhi, a major political and spiritual leader of India, followed nonviolent actions, avoiding any bloodshed in the country during their struggle for Independence. Because of his compassionate nature many leaders in today's world has looked him upon. So leader must be compassionate first without being in fluence by any ulterior motive. Secondly, with compassion, leader must be far-sighted and able administrator. He must be able to organize his government in a way that it would reach the grass root level. No section of the society should be left out. Policy or scheme initiated for the benefit of public must be implemented in such way that it should not get politicize and corrupt during the process of implementation. Administration should notice and reach the problems being faced by public and tackle it on time without unnecessary delay. And most important of all he must knows well about the interest of country in today's global world and able to create a conductive atmosphere to achieve lasting peace and prosperity in global village.

Avant-Garde fashion history

Context Page Introduction 2 History of avian-garden 2-3 Avian-garden in fashion history 3 Contemporary fashion and avian-garden 3 Discussion of Suzan Hens' autumn/ winter collection 4 Discussion of Assistant Louse's 2011 autumn/winter collections-5 Discussion of Black Coffee's 2013 winter collection 5-6 Discussion of Luda Inglenooks 2012 autumn/winter collection 6-7 Discussion of Taboo Machete's 2012 collection 7 Conclusion 7-8 List of Illustrations 9-13 List of References 14-15 What is avian-garden and how does it fit into South African contemporary fashion design? In order for one to determine if you are for or against avian-garden, and pacifically in relations to South African avian-garden, one must first define avian- garden and explore the origin and history of the movement. According to The Oxford Dictionary of Art, avian-garden is defined as â€Å"a term originally used to describe the foremost part of an army advancing into battle (also called vanguard) and now applied to a g roup, particularly of artist, that considers itself innovative and ahead of the majority' (Chillers, 2004:42).Avian-garden therefore refers to designs that are new, innovative and cutting edge. South African avian-garden is presently a very small part of the local fashion industry, UT it is a developing fashion trend with great potential. South African avian-garden designers are constantly pushing the envelope in order to stretch the minds of the consumers and other designers. This carries great potential for the South African fashion industry as well as the economy, for if the designers succeed to be truly avian-garden, it is bound to have a positive outcome.I am therefore arguing for the existence and development of South African avian-garden and will be discussing Suzan Hens' 2011 autumn/winter range, die form, Assistant Louis 2011 autumn/ winter range, Black Coffee's 2013 winter range, WREATHE, Luda Inglenook' 2012 autumn/winter range, Anamosa, as well as Taboo Machete's 2012 ra nge, Kabob EAI Balboa. Avian-garden first made its appearance in art during die late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. A small group of artist decided to break away from the rules that bound artist into creating only an established style of art. They actively attacked the institution of art in order to separate and detach themselves from it, but also to reincorporate themselves and their art into life (Berger, 1984: xvii). The first avian- garden art appeared is the Italian Futurism, French Cubism and German Expressionism movements. These movements were so different due to their fundamentally new aspirations and origins in relation between the artist and the world as well as the subject and the object. Dadaism, Surrealism and Constructivism followed soon after, continuing in these aspirations (Cabooses, 1971 : 53).During the late twentieth century, the fashion century came to an end and postposition came into being. This new fashion movement is expressed in the reversal of the relationship between the fashion designer and follower. Since the ass's, fashion is no longer initiated by the aristocracy or the bourgeoisie and then hefted down to the general public, but now introduced by the general publics street style where after it moves into the salons of haute couture where it is adapted and mimicked (Vine, 2005: 63).In the ass's, fashion designers started implementing the use of non-fashionable elements to create the avian-garden fashion beyond fashion. Western Paris-based fashion designs and ideas were shattered and the idea of dressing oneself as a ‘man', Woman' or ‘lady became an out of date concept. The avian-garden fashion trend aimed to expose the old function of clothes that classified people into groups of age, gender and status (Geeky, 2012:103). Furthermore, avian- garden designers aimed to shock the public and not to create beautiful and luxurious clothing (Vine, 2005: 64).Today, contemporary civilization is so desensitizing to norms and values that designers struggle to succeed in using the shock treatment as a way to draw attention to their work. It is also very difficult for designers to create totally new designs, for almost everything has been done before. Due to this, as a designer, avian-garden is such a difficult movement to be apart of. South African designers therefore also tend not to be a part of the avian-garden movement, but to follow the European trends and use it as part of their design inspiration.A few South African designers has accepted the challenge of designing avian-garden garments, but are they really a match for the famous and established avian-garden designers or are they simply following in the footsteps of other avian-garden designers? In case study 1, Suzan Hens' 2011 autumn/ winter range is depicted. This range's name is â€Å"die form†, because she drew her inspiration from the anatomy of the human body (Hens, 2011). When one looks at the images, one can see that in some instances, continues lines are used to depict the flow and natural rhythm of the human body. Her aim was to reveal the inside of the body on the exterior of a garment, thus creating an exoskeleton (Hens, 2011). This is evident in every design due to the different techniques that she implemented. In this collection one can also see that the muscular and skeletal systems are taken and distorted and warped to create remarkable designs. The fracture shapes in the garments, also contributes to an anatomical silhouette. Suzan describes her collection and says â€Å"it is about inner symbolism, looking at our inner physiology and taking it outside which in turn represents the unveiling of our hidden psyche† (Hens, 2011).Suzan Hens is one of South Africans leading avian-garden fashion designers, but does her designs live up to the standards and definition of true avian-garden design? Although her range has a very interesting concept, and forms such an excellent collection, it is not truly avian-garden, for it has been done before. In 2010, Gucci had a range inspired by x-rays and the same year Jean Paul Guiltier launched his creation as part of the fall collection, inspired by exploring the concept of wearing narrower as outerwear Goanna, 2010).This proves that although her designs might have been lassie as avian-garden, it is not truly innovative. She did thus also not set a trend, but followed the trendsetters. In case study 2, one can see Assistant Louse's 2011 autumn/winter collection. In this collection, he uses different layers of fabric to represent an exploration of self- expression in the context of social, sexual and traditional cultures. At the same time it also comments on our perception of an African aesthetic (Melange, 2011).Assistant was inspired by the way that different cultures wrapped their cloths, especially the Mass' and Indian cultures as well as the ancient Greeks (Mulberry: 2011). He also explored with African aesthetics in his coll ection, which can be seen in the beaded necklines. His collaboration of different cultures' way of wrapping their clothing, led to a balance of colonial and nomadic styles. In this collection, a diverse range of high-wasted peg-leg trousers can be seen along with harem pants and pleated shoulder shawls.Loose fabrics are also used to create these different kinds of wraps and loose silhouettes. The warm and earthy colors, such as mud-grey, brown, blue, red and burnt orange, also refer back to African aesthetics. These colors bring the collection and theme to life. Colorful belts that are wrapped and folded over loose vests as well as over-sized neck pieces are also some of the accessories and styling that contributes to the feel of the overall range (Mulberry, 2011).Assistant Low is viewed as one of South Africans up and coming avian-garden designers, but these designs can not be classified as truly avian-garden. The use of fabrics, such as t-shirt fabric, and the combination of cloth ing items might be a new addition to traditional culture's wrapping cloths or way of styling, but that does not make it avian-garden. As soon as a designer uses another culture's clothing as inspiration, the ND product is likely not to be avian-garden, for it has mostly been done before. The third case study is Black Coffee's 2013 winter range, WREATHE. This range entwines together contemporary engineering and fabrics with classic and feminine silhouettes. The textures that is clearly visible and one of the key elements of this collection, is created by braiding industrial felt and the layering of mesh panels. In this collection, Black Coffee experimented with the sculptural process of carving, where the shape is exposed within and not constructed by the foundational material (Black Coffee, 2012).This also served as their inspiration for the range. With this collection, Black Coffee hoped to create a ‘collection that captivates by precision and seduces through romantic imaginat ion' (Black Coffee, 2012). This collection uses a very soft and feminine color palette in order to convey the romantic feel and to highlight the classic silhouettes. It also uses the classic clothing elements such as high-wasted pants, coats and dresses but change them in such a way that they appear as innovative garments. In 2009, Given launched a spring range with a dress that appears to be very similar to some of Black Coffee's 2013 winter designs (Style, 2012). Although that is the case, Black Coffee can still be viewed as an avian-garden designer, for it creates truly innovative designs that are beautiful and functional at the same time. In case study 4, Luda Inglenooks 2012 autumn/winter range, Anamosa, are depicted. His inspiration for the designs is traditional Xhosa bodywork, craft, symbolism and colors. He uses these in knitwear made of mohair and merino wool in order for mammograms, Xhosa initiates, to wear it after they have gone through the initiation process (Inglenook, 2012). This knitwear depicts his cultural aesthetics and is very practical at the same time. AAA of his designs is contemporary and yet culturally applicable and brings the Xhosa aesthetics to any outfit (Design Indaba, 2013). One can clearly see the use of the Xhosa patterns and the bodywork inspiration in the Jersey designs. They are also colorful, true to the Xhosa traditional colors.Furthermore, Luda has succeeded in creating garments that is formal enough for the mammograms to wear, for they traditionally have to wear formal clothing for up to six months after the initiation process, to symbolize their newly found manhood Inglenook, 2012). This Jersey-knitwear does not seem to be avian-garden design, but no knitwear has been made using Xhosa patterns and bodywork as inspiration before. If one looks at the definition of avian-garden, stating that a design should be innovative to be classified as avian-garden design, then Luda's Anamosa range can be classified as avian-garden des ign.Case study 5 depicts Taboo Machete's 2012 range, Kabob EAI Balboa, meaning blanket of the prestige (Design Indaba, 2013). Taboo uses Bassist blankets to create stunning coats and handbags. The handbags are made out of the blanket scraps, in order to eliminate as much waste as possible. By up-cycling the blankets, Taboo is also contributing to a â€Å"greener† society (Macbeth, 2013). Traditional Sotto patterns can be seen in the coats, as they are traditionally on Bassist blankets. These blanket coats can certainly be classified as avian-garden, for it is cutting edge, and has not been done before. There is currently a blanket trend amongst males, but none that include fashioning clothing out of blankets. The trend merely includes males draping blankets with fashionable patterns around their neck and shoulders, almost like an over-sized scarf (Bogart, 2013). Contemporary South African fashion does not really include avian-garden fashion designs. Most trends are simply copi ed from European fashion trends, for we are a season behind. Therefore South Africa has a very small, yet developing avian-garden fashion movement seen in the designs of fashion designers such as Suzan Hens, Assistant Low, Black Coffee, Luda Inglenook and Taboo Macbeth. These designers' works would most likely not be classified as avian-garden by famous European designers, but from a South African point of view, they would qualify. Just like the small group of artists that broke away from the bounding rules of revises established art styles, our small South African group of designers is attempting avian-garden design. They may not be the leaders of the pack, but they are certainly contending and attacking the system of following European trends. Although I have now seen that South African avian-garden is really limited and almost none existing, I am still arguing for the development of South African fashion design. I believe that the success of being truly avian-garden will lead to ex posure and publicity for the country, which in turn will lead to a positive economic outcome. 2003 words List of Illustrations Case Study 1: Suzan Hens Suzan Hens, Die Form, Audiometer 2011.
